| [link] I have always found collage to be an art form that is unique in both purpose and process. Through the simple recombination of separate images, collage is capable of achieving a surreal, dream-like quality quite unlike other mediums. It is a process that relies heavily on luck, and as the artist, I act mostly as a guide, deciding what to do with whatever usable images happen to turn up. This thrill of discovery, of never knowing how the next piece will look, is one of my favorite aspects of collage. After years of experimentation, it occurred to me that the individual images making up a collage didn’t all have to rest on the same flat surface, but could stand independently, as if floating in air. This simple idea proved to have a more difficult execution. The overall design is created in Photoshop, using a combination of public domain images and my own photographs. Each image is printed separately on glossy cardstock and cut out by hand. They are reinforced with chipboard, foam core, and metal wiring, creating a complex support structure meticulously hidden from view. These structures necessitate a “shadowbox” housing, inspired by the original shadowbox artist, Joseph Cornell. Though Cornell’s work was more mixed-media by nature, he and I share the need for a small stage, a window to an intimate space where the viewer’s imagination can have a more tangible relationship to the objects within. I realized long ago that this technique works well with the spirit of collage, and it is a style that I continue to develop and explore. [link] |
